Do you want to find a cure for HHT in your lifetime? If you answered YES, then we need your passion and enthusiasm to help us organize a grassroots fundraiser in your area.
What is grassroots fundraising? It is taking a fundraising initiative to the base level – your hometown community. What better place to start educating about HHT and raising money than your own community of family, friends, schools, and physicians. People are more inclined to give to a cause that doesn’t affect them directly when the cause is connected to someone they know. A large number of small, grassroots events can have more impact than one large event. However, grassroots fundraising can grow into something larger over time.
Not sure what type of event to host? Here are some ways to help, check out these FUNdraising ideas:
Host a party or another fun event
Get your friends, family and co-workers together for a good cause. Host a fundraising and awareness party to help us find a cure for HHT.

Birthdays and anniversaries – Mark the celebration of someone special in your life with a memorial or tribute donation.
Dinner party – Ask your guests to donate what they would have spent on a meal and drinks at a restaurant.
Movie night – Charge “admission” or pass around an empty popcorn tub for donations.

Garage sale – Donate half the proceeds and let your buyers
know it!
Poker or bridge – split the winning pot with the HHT Foundation. Maybe the winner will donate back to the cause.

Remember the possibilities are endless!
Host a sports event
Organize a sporting event or competition or participate in an already existing event in your community. Run, hike, bowl or bike – it’s all for a good cause.
Run a marathon – Or choose your own adventure – canoe, run, hike, climb – and ask participants to collect donations.
Bowl-a-thon – Sell tickets and ask for a donation from bowlers for every strike.
Darts – Host a tournament in a local bar and have teams compete to raise the most funds. Have volunteers bartend and donate their tips.
Golf tournament – Host a charity tournament in honor of individuals living with HHT. Ask your friends and colleagues to join you in a game of golf.
Kayak or canoe race – Charge an entry fee; ask spectator to donate to support their favorite paddler. Ask a local sporting goods store for
donations or prizes.
Basketball, baseball or softball tournament – charge an entry fee per team and “pass the Hat” among spectators.
Car rally – charge an entry fee per car. Have a “car wash for the cause” after the event and collect donations.
Once you have chosen the fundraising event that is right for you, remember the following:
1) Recruit additional volunteers to assist you in organizing the event. Remember that people want to volunteer for a good cause and will help you in your fund-raising efforts because you personally asked them to take an active role. Make a list of people that you have helped in the past with their cause by making a donation or volunteering your time for their event.
2) Determine your budget. Project the expenses for the event. Once expenses are determined, you can set the cost for people attending the event or determine the recommended donation amount. Remember, that you are organizing the event to make a profit.
3) The HHT Foundation is available to assist you. We can provide materials and support as you plan your fundraising activity or event. We can help you brainstorm, provide suggestions and put you in touch with volunteers who have organized a similar event. In addition, we can also help you set up an on-line fundraising page for your event.
Please contact Christine Auro, Awareness, Fundraising and Public Relations Manager, with your fundraising ideas via e-mail christine.auro@hht.org . She will be happy to discuss your event with you.
